Splenic Pathology

The spleen is situated in the upper left part of the abdomen and is involved in the haematological (blood) and immune systems of the body.

Several disorders (such as platelet consumption disorders and lymphoma) can affect, or be affected by, the spleen. Removal of the spleen can be part of the treatment for these disorders.

Removal of the spleen is called a 'Splenectomy'.
